Interview with Caio Lopez from Cat Nigiri
Who is Cat Nigiri and who are you?
Caio: Cat Nigiri is a small indie game studio in the south of Brazil. We all love cats, and most of us like nigiris.
Why did you choose the name Cat Nigiri? Isn’t this some super cruel type of sushi?!
Caio: Cruel or not, it almost doubles the protein value of the whole meal. Not that we intend to eat it, though; We just want to get our cats back all greasy and stinky from the rotten salmon. The name was literally the first idea that crossed our minds in 2011, as we figured that we should either go with an animal or some food as the name for our company.
How did you come up with the idea for Necrosphere?
Caio: I really wanted to make a minimalist metroidvania game that would put pro-players and super-casuals in a common ground. Not jumping and making people control direction with both hands is a mind-bending experience that invites the player to learn to play a game from scratch.
What makes Necrosphere so special?
Caio: You start the game as a complete noob, and you finish it feeling like a gaming god.
Which games did inspire you when creating your first game?
Caio: For Necrosphere, the main influences were Super Metroid, VVVVVV and Axiom Verge.
What are your favorite games of all time?
Caio: Super Metroid, Doom, Super Mario World, VVVVVV and Age of Empires II.
What will be your next project? Can you talk about it already?
Caio: Well, yeah! Cat Nigiri is about to finish development of our new game KEEN, a sliding puzzle with loads of tactical combat! As a personal project, I am developing a new metroidvania adventure of my own! I’ll let you guys know all about it.
Pick one: Cats / Dogs / Penguins
Caio: Can one pet a penguin? If it’s from an abandoned penguins shelter, I’d give it a try.
Anything else you want to add?
Caio: Thank you, Strictly Limited, for taking part in making this dream come true, and count on me for all my future projects.
