Interview with Cabral, CEO of QUByte Interactive

Tell us something about yourself – what are your duties within the company?

After quite a few years working as a Programmer and Project Manager for IT companies, I have founded QUByte in 2009 with a couple of friends. We have released more than 20 games since then, between original IPs and third-party development projects.

Currently, I’m the CEO at QUByte, and my responsibilities include Strategic Planning, Resources Management, Business Analyses et al. But what I really love is programming, hence whenever opportunity arises I try to get involved technically with the projects, mainly with backend programming. I’m also dedicating a lot of my time to Gameplay prototypes and AI programming, two areas I’m very fond of.

How did the cooperation with the Brazilian podcast 99Vidas come about?

I’ve always been a fan of podcasts in general, so it’s no surprise that when I first heard 99Vidas, back in 2014, I immediately identified with all the stories they told, as they reflected my own experience growing as a gamer.

After listening to a dozen episodes or so, I decided to send them an e-mail proposing a partnership for creating a game which, to my surprise, they promptly replied.

Since the first meeting throughout the whole development cycle, from the first demo, produced for the crowdfunding campaign, to the final version their support has been of utmost importance. Not only have they provided us with the background required to produce the content we see in the game, but also during the gameplay testing and fine tuning.

The final product is definitely a reflection of all the dedication, hard work and love both Qubyte and 99Vidas have for the video games.

What was the most memorable moment during the development of 99Vidas?

I don’t know if I’d call that memorable but a rather curious fact, to say the least, about the development of the game is that at the early stages of planning, one of the very first things that crossed our minds was the ending of the game. We have literally started the whole planning of the game around the final scene and evolved from there. In a way that allowed us to justify a wide range of things we’d like in the game, as we already knew where the journey would end.

Of course, we’ll not go into details here, but if I could give you a piece of advice – Do not turn of your game before the credits roll.

What is your favorite character and stage from 99Vidas?

I like them all, but I have to admit my favorite is Dan, one of the unlockable characters. His powers are based on sand and he’s inspired by Egyptian themes, which make his moves not only a feast to the eyes, but also very effective against large groups of enemies.

As for the stage, the first Bonus does stand out because of how different it is. I don’t want to go into too much details to avoid spoiling the experience to the players, but I’m quite sure you’ll understand what I mean once you see it

Why a 2D side-scrolling brawler and what is your favorite game of this genre (besides 99Vidas)?

The decision to develop a 2D Beat’em Up was only natural, as both us at QUByte and the guys at 99Vidas are great fans of the genre, and it best suited the idea of a game to bring friends together and remind us of good old times.

As for my personal favorite game of the genre? Final Fight, the Arcade version, no doubt! I know quite a few people consider Streets of Rage to be a superior game, and I do agree to some extent, but Final Fight means much more than just a game to me. Every time I play it, it is like going back to my teenage years, when life was much simpler, and you can’t put a price on that.

16-Bit: Super NES or Sega Mega Drive / Genesis?

They both hold a very special place in my heart, as I had the two of them at the time. Though I must admit that the Super NES kept me hooked for quite long because of Street Fighter II, but I also have a very special connection with the Mega Drive because of countless hours spent playing Super Volleyball with my brother – Miss you, Big Bro!

At the end of the day, they both had experiences that meant a lot to all us, and made each of them feel unique – That’s why they are both so special.

What’s your favorite food?

I cannot deny my Brazilian roots so, rice and beans, fresh out of the oven, and some steak. Our very own definition of comfort food! 😀

Interview with Podcast 99Vidas

For those few people who don’t know, what’s 99Vidas?

99Vidas is a Brazilian podcast, created in 2010, in which four friends in their mid-thirties talk about video games, both classic and modern.

More than video games, 99Vidas is about growing up as a gamer in the 1980s and 90s, and all the things that permeated our lives during those times, filling us with nostalgia, while also enjoying our lives, and our games, today – We’re still gamers after all!

You are very popular in Brazil! Have you ever thought of expanding to other countries?

We think about all the time! Exactly because these topics of video games and nostalgia are universal, we know people from other countries also relate to what we have to say.

But before we take this very important step, we are committed to finding the right format for each new country we want to reach. We don’t simply want to translate the content we have to other languages, we want all the content we produce to be relevant to them – The way we all deserve it!

What do you love about Video Games?

What we love the most about video games is the fact that it’s so much more than just playing. Growing up playing video games made us realize how plural and enriching that experience is.

We have experienced the social aspect of video games while playing side-by-side with our childhood friends in couch co-op and then connected with people all over the world as adults.

We have experienced games that immersed us in their amazing worlds and stories, while also enjoying the sheer fun of playing just for the sake of it.

We have used video games as escapism from difficult moments in our lives, while also experiencing multiple, and quite diverse, lives in every one of them.

That’s exactly what we love about video games, that it means so many different things for each one of us, a multitude of experiences in a single act.

What is your favorite game console and game of all time?

That’s a tough one! As a group of four, even though our backgrounds are very similar, our tastes do vary a lot.

Instead of picking a single one, we’d like to list here the favorite for each one of our protagonists, would that work?

Jurandir Filho, in-game KING – Chrono Trigger

Izzy Nobre, in-game IZZY – Super Mario World

Evandro de Freitas, in-game FRIES – Portal 2

Bruno Carvalho, in-game OAK! – Shadow of the Colossus
