Immortal Redneck is an FPS set in Egypt with rogue-lite elements. The game mixes old-school first-person shooter action with rogue-lite mechanics. Frantic gameplay, twitch controls and an arcade-style feel meet randomly generated dungeons, a complete skill tree, permanent death and 9 classes with different traits.

Interview With The Developers

With Immortal Redneck you developed your first game for consoles. Tell us, who is Crema Games?

Crema is a Madrid-based Spanish indie developer studio. We started developing mobile apps and games, and we had some successes like the ‘Instant Buttons’ app. But what we wanted to do were console games, so as soon as we thought we were ready we start doing our first console game, Immortal Redneck.

Sending a Redneck-Tourist into a haunted pyramid… How did you come up with this idea?

Well, it was actually born out of a brainstorming session that was a little crazy. We wanted to make a crazy mix to attract attention, due to the great competition in the videogames market, and so came the idea of mixing the Egyptian culture with a redneck.

It also fitted in with the old-school shooter philosophy, when the storyline of the game was meaningless. Since we wanted our game to be reminiscent of those ancient jewels, we decided to make the mix.

Have you guys ever been to Egypt yourselves?

Haha, actually no, never. But we’d love to visit it.

What was the most difficult part during development of Immortal Redneck?

Since it’s our first console game, a lot of things have been difficult. But if I have to be more specific I would say the porting from PC to consoles. All the QA processes and making the game optimal for the specs of each platform is a huge task.

How long did development take and what are your most memorable moments of that timespan?

It took almost 2 years of development, and I think the most memorable moment was when we delivered the first playable version to our friends. Their reactions were like, “hey, this is actually really fun.” Although it sounded a bit like, all of the previous games were bullshit, we were still very happy, we had something good on our hands.

When it comes to games, what is your favorite genre and title?

This question is very difficult, we like many genres and too many games. But I think I could say that we especially like any genre that requires a lot of skill. I think the genre that comes closest is the arcade, in all its forms, either a platform or a shooter. We love games that are challenging for the player. About the games… I would say that the games we have played the most have been Super Smash Bros and Gears of War. But we love many more.

Have you ever played Redneck Rampage?

Yes, we did, we loved that game. A fun and entertaining game for sure.

Any hints on what is next for Crema Games on consoles?

Yes! We can say it will be a much more ambitious game than Immortal Redneck and we’re a little bit scared. I can also say it has nothing to do with Immortal Redneck, or the shooter genre.  We hope to make an announcement soon.

Anything you ever wanted to say in an interview?

Just to say thank you for the interview and we hope everyone enjoy the game as much as we do.

As a final statement: What awesome stuff can gamers be expecting, buying Immortal Redneck?

A very, very fun and addictive game. That kind of game that allows you to play 20-minute run, but somehow you end up playing 2 hours in a row. You can also expect to relive the speed experience of old games like Unreal Tournament.

Why Strictly Limited loves this game

Ancient mysteries, haunted pyramids in the middle of the desert, Egyptian Gods, dark magic and right in the middle of it all a redneck tourist who turned into a mummy after an accident…and a vast variety of weapons to enjoy!

It’s not just the name Immortal Redneck that may be reminiscent of ancient classics like Redneck Rampage, the whole game offers old school feeling, but combined with some very modern fine-tuning. Not to forget the wonderfully quirky story.

It really feels like a best-of compilation of all the old shooters we enjoyed playing on consoles (and PC), a mixture of Doom, Serious Sam and Exhumed/PowerSlave borrowing just enough roguelite elements to make this game incredibly accessible and rewarding without being too punishing.

Right after the first session, the game impresses with its simple, yet immensely addictive gameplay which keeps you pushing forward eager to discover what lies ahead. Easy to learn, hard to master – FPS-gameplay right out of the textbook!  Immortal Redneck provides a fair, steadily increasing challenge.

It’s randomly generated levels, combined with a fast-paced gameplay make time just fly. Even failing becomes a positive event. You play, you die, you upgrade your character and play some more – you do this until you make it to the top of each of the three pyramids and face one of the huge bosses which you’ll eventually beat – in case you’ve earned enough skills, that is.

With all those unique weapons, tons of character traits and powerups scattered around the stages and an constantly changing level design, we always feel intrigued to explore ‘just one more room’.
