Creating a Unique Horror VR Experience: Meet the Last Labyrinth Development Team

The development efforts of Last Labyrinth was spearheaded by mastermind Director and Producer Hiromichi Takahashi, creator of the Doko Demo Issyo series and co-creator of Toro (the Sony Cat). At Takashi-san’s side creating VR gaming history, an incredibly talented team of developers who made Last Labyrinth a true virtual reality horror classic embraced by fans worldwide.

Having previously worked on titles such as The Last Guardian and Puppeteer, brilliant Director and Game Designer Tetsuya Fukuyama has been essential in creating the life-like experience in Last Labyrinth, effectively blurring the line between VR and reality by pushing the virtual experience to new heights.

Lead Character Animator Atsuko Fukuyama, previously known for her splendid animation work on titles such as ICO and Shadow of the Colossus, has been in charge of bringing your VR-companion Katia to life. A lot of time has gone into creating a myriad of variations of animation to make Katia feel as life-like as possible, much thanks to Atsuko Fukuyama's dedicated efforts.

So what about the environment where the game takes place? Lead Environment Artist Michiko Kusaba has made sure to have characters and environment come together seamlessly. Maybe better known to the broader video game community for his extraordinary work on the beloved Gran Turismo series, the Last Labyrinth owes a lot to the versatile skills of Kusaba.

Ambient and chilling sounds? Sound Design virtuoso Takuya Hanaoka has got you covered! Having previously created Sound/SE for Monster Rancher and Super Robot Wars, he went straight on the task to make the VR experience even more immersive. With a focus to enhance and strengthen the dark happenings in the game, the gameplay is now filled with situations where the sound design plays a vital role in stirring up eerie feelings for the player.

Besides overseeing all of the programming being done, Lead Software Engineer and overall gentleman Hibiki Fujii was usually busy accommodating and materializing Fukuyama-san's near to impossible programming-requests. As you may have realized by now, he was ever-successful in these endeavors.

Two prominent members of the team stem from countries from outside of Japan. One of them is Kimia Tabari, an up-and-coming 3D artist who helped to bring Hirochimi Takashi's vague requests to life. The other one is Alexis Jassmin Broadhead, former US resident who has lived in Japan for more than 10 years. As a Technical artist and 3D Animator for Last Labyrinth, she made sure that the workflow in the animation department was as optimized as possible, all while doing animator support and handling translations being used when communicating the game to the community and media.

We all have this small team of Japanese video games industry veterans to thank for the wonderful horror experience that is Last Labyrinth, having poured their passionate work into what became a true VR horror classic. If you have yet to experience it, now’s a good time.
